We provide a variety of opportunities for employees, regardless of location, to help develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for effective performance both now and in the future.
There are many forms of L&D available for employees at Emerald, ranging from external training courses to internal action learning development programmes. Here is a brief summary of some of the opportunities we offer:
Action learning – there are many forms of action learning at Emerald but the most established programme is The Emerald Academy. This is our internal corporate Academy which is open to all employees who wish to develop their workplace skills and career development.
Business awareness sessions – these are used to develop employees' knowledge of the wider company and specific business units.
Classroom training – we use this more formal learning for a range of diverse subject areas - these courses are delivered by Emerald experts or external professionals.
Education – this learning can be vocational or academic and is a formal method of learning undertaken to obtain a qualification. Emerald currently have individuals undertaking MBAs and MAs along with other recognized diplomas and certificates.
eLearning – Emerald has its own eLearning facility which uses technology to enhance more traditional approaches to learning and compliment other existing methods of L&D.
Mentoring – the Emerald Mentoring programmes are designed to establish long term one-to-one relationships, in which an individual is given the opportunity, through a series of informal and confidential meetings to draw upon the knowledge and assistance of a more experienced individual.
On-the-job training - a consistently effective and well utilised method of learning at Emerald. This is relevant to the employees role and the individual gets the opportunity to practice what they have learned immediately.
We believe in the value of experience
Secondments can offer fantastic benefits for an organization and its employees. We encourage secondments where they promote development and growth as they allow staff to gain knowledge and skills that may not necessarily be available to them in their original role.

We offer opportunities for insight and experience
This is a great way to gain experience of our business, the publishing industry and more generally a growing ambitious organization. Formal and informal programmes have been developed to give individuals the opportunity to get an insight into what we do and how they can contribute. Emerald received the ‘Workplace of the Year: Best Newcomer’ Award at the National Council for Work Experience Awards in 2010/2011 and has also received the Quality Standard for Work Experience provision.
At Emerald we are committed to workplace diversity and providing the right working environment for diversity to flourish. In support of this, an initiative called STRIDE has been established to celebrate the different behaviours and personality traits of all genders, providing the right working environment for diversity to flourish. By unlocking the potential of all staff and overcoming challenges to any real or perceived barriers to progression, the members of the STRIDE group are spreading a positive message about diversity across the business.
We give something back
Emerald recognizes the value in supporting charitable causes. Each year, we select a Charity to support and an internal Charity Committee plan and manage fundraising activities throughout the year.

The Emerald Foundation was also formally established in 2009, playing a significant role in the support of local communities with donations to Opera North and towards the restoration of Leeds Grand Theatre.
